As part of a Location as Subject project in editorial photography, April chose to focus on East Chicago, IN, a town struggling with an identity crisis as it exists in the shadow of Chicago and reflects the economic decline of many former factory communities. Through a combination of portraits and environmental photos, she documented both the visible deterioration of the area and the enduring humanity of its residents.
